Welcome to our Campaign website

Morden Park is one of the largest green areas in Morden, a conservation area conveyed to public ownership for recreation and educational use’. Merton Council proposes to allow “Goals”, a private company, to build 10 five-a-side football pitches, 4 seven-a-side football pitches, 1 full-size football pitch, 2 multi-sport areas, and 2 full-size grass football pitches, a car park (with a capacity for upto 99 cars) and a clubhouse with a licensed bar on part of the park. Apart from the 2 full-size grass pitches, all the pitches would have artificial surfaces and powerful floodlights and would be used 7 days a week from 9.00am to 11.00pm – by those who can afford to spend up to £60 an hour to hire a pitch. to hire a pitch. When full there would be more than 300 people playing at any one time and at hand-over times between games there may be as many as 600 people on the playing fields, and more in the licensed bar.

Take a look at an example Goals development in Raynes Park, located next to the A3:    CLICK HERE
We believe the plan is wrong because
  • It is far too intensive a development for this residential area, with so
many people playing on floodlit pitches until 11.00 at night. With as
many as 300 people playing extremely competitive games. Nearly all
other Goals developments are on light industrial estates
  • It would damage local wildlife, including barn owls and woodpeckers
  • It would involve the loss of much-needed green open space in London
  • It involves handing over a public space, currently used for free by local people, particularly children and dog walkers, to a private company to
    make money
  • It would turn part of a conservation area into a car park
  • The park is not a suitable place for a licensed bar aimed mainly at
    young men
  • The noise and light pollution from the football pitches would cause problems for
    local residents.
  We believe the council should
  • Protect this space from commercial development
  • Come up with a plan that meets the
    needs of the whole community

Last year Westminster Council stopped Goals from building a similar development in Regents Park, after a campaign by local residents.

Please help us to stop this act of commercial vandalism in Morden. If we act together we can persuade the council to change its mind.

The Residents of Wandsworth have just won their Campaign against a Goals development on a green area in their neighbourhood. In a similar move, the residents of Regents Park also won their Campaign against a Goals development in their area. Residents successfully campaigned and stopped Goals & their Councils' in their tracks!

Please visit their Campaign websites by clicking above. Please note that it is worth your while lodging objections as soon as Goals apply for planning permission with Merton Council.
