Our Cause

Early in 2008, the public were told of Goals bid to develop 18 acres of the 60 acres) of the park nearest the railway line – now designated A Field (highlighted in red).

  • Building 10 five-a-side football pitches, 4 seven-a-side football pitches, 1 full-size football pitch, 2 multi-sport areas, and 2 full-size grass football pitches.
  • All pitches being floodlit late into the evening, 7 days a week
  • Pitches being surrounded by high fencing and inaccessible to non paying public
  • Parking for at least 99 cars – how many on the grass?
  • Building a club house with bar and approach across the playing fields

At the nearby Goals Soccer Centre in Wimbledon on the A3:

We believe this development is totally inappropriate as it:

  • Sound and Social distrubances will affect the whole surrounding area
  • Is totally unsustainable (e.g. floodlighting 7 nights per week all year round)
  • Is far too intensive given the residential surrounding area drawing in addition traffic from a wide area
  • Will destroy a large area of Metropolitan Open Land and natural grassland, being replaced by artificial surfaces (Astroturf)
  • Could not be afforded by many people in the community
  • Is being promoted by the Merton Council for the purpose of making money and will deny the use of the land to the residents of Morden for 100 years

An alternative community proposal has been designed for 60 acres of playing fields as against 18 acres of the A Field (highlighted in red) – the subject of Goals Soccer proposal. The community proposal would se all of the playing fields used not only for Football, but also for Cricket, Archery and Tennis etc. by anyone in the community. It has the necessary financial backing to get started but has so far been rejected by Merton Council.

We will need the support of everybody to stop this crazy over intensive development on green space.
